The Jewish Wedding Process

A traditional Jewish wedding is punctuated by various rituals.
The religious ceremony of the Jewish wedding must be performed in accordance with traditional Jewish values.
The civil wedding must take place before the religious wedding, which can take place any day except Saturday, the Sabbath.

The two future spouses must be of the Jewish faith and follow a preparation with a rabbi.

Traditionally, the bride and groom do not see each other during the week preceding the religious celebration and the bride-to-be must take classes with a married woman to prepare for life as a couple.

The day before the wedding, there is the ritual of the “Mikvé” which is the purifying bath for the woman. The bride and groom must fast on the day of the wedding until the ceremony.
The bride wears a white dress and covers her shoulders with a veil or a bolero for the synagogue.
The groom wears a prayer shawl called the Talith.
The ceremony is usually held under the “Houppa” in the synagogue but can also be held outside. The “Chuppah” is a white sheet fixed on 4 pillars which symbolizes the future home of the bride and groom.
The breaking of the glass marks the end of the ceremony. Traditionally, it is the groom who performs it.
The wedding meal is called “Seouda” and is prepared by a kosher caterer.
During the wedding party, the bride and groom are raised on chairs by their guests and everyone dances.
